ChatGPT shopping means people ask ChatGPT what to buy and get a list of products, sometimes a whole buyer’s guide, instead of ten blue links. Products reach those answers in three ways: ChatGPT reads public retail sites, merchants send it product feeds, and platforms such as Shopify send their merchants’ products for them. In the US, some of those products can now be bought without leaving the chat.
This piece explains each of those routes and what they ask of a store, whatever platform it runs on. If you’re on Shopify and want the step-by-step settings, the Shopify walkthrough covers them; this is the wider picture it sits in.
How ChatGPT picks products
There are two shopping experiences inside ChatGPT, and they work slightly differently.
Shopping results in ordinary answers
Ask ChatGPT for the best waterproof dog coat under £50 and it can answer with product cards: images, prices and where to buy. Those come from what it can find across the web, which is why the crawlers and the page content matter as much as they do for search.
Shopping research
According to Search Engine Journal’s report, OpenAI rolled out shopping research on 24 November 2025 to logged-in users on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans. You describe what you need, answer questions about budget and preferences, and after a few minutes get a buyer’s guide. OpenAI says results are organic, based on publicly available retail sites, and draw on price, availability, reviews, specs and images.
◆ Shopping research, in OpenAI’s own testing
What that accuracy figure tells you
OpenAI measured how often the answer met all of a shopper’s requirements, such as price, colour and material. The better the assistant gets at matching several requirements at once, the more it depends on product data that states those details clearly. A product page that doesn’t say what something is made of can’t match a question about material.
Nobody pays for placement
OpenAI describes the results as organic. There’s no ad slot to buy your way in; what gets a product chosen is data that answers the question being asked.
Three routes in
Whatever platform you run on, there are three ways your products can reach ChatGPT. Most stores should be using the first already and planning for the second.
| Reading your site | OpenAI’s search crawler reads public product pages | Crawlers allowed, content in the HTML, clean structured data |
| A product feed | You send structured product data directly, refreshed daily | An accurate feed: identifiers, prices, stock, media, delivery |
| Your platform | The platform sends its merchants’ products for them | Complete product data in your admin; check your settings |
Reading your site
OpenAI’s crawler documentation separates its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, from its training crawler, GPTBot. To be found in ChatGPT’s answers, OAI-SearchBot has to be allowed in robots.txt, and the product details have to be in the page’s HTML rather than loaded later by scripts. The free AI visibility checker tests both on any page.
A product feed
OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol documentation describes the feed: a secure CSV or JSON file, refreshed with daily snapshots. Required fields make sure prices and availability show correctly; optional ones, such as media and reviews, help ranking and trust. It’s the same idea as a Google Shopping feed, and a store with a good Google feed has a head start.
Through your platform
Some platforms do the feed for you. Shopify’s guide to agentic storefronts says eligible products are automatically discoverable by AI channels through Shopify Catalog, with ChatGPT listed and an opt-out available. On Magento, WooCommerce or a custom build, check whether your platform or an extension offers the same; if it doesn’t, the site-reading route and your own feed are what you have.
Allowlisting for shopping research
Search Engine Journal reports that OpenAI offers an allowlisting process for merchants who want to appear in shopping research results. It’s worth applying if ChatGPT is a meaningful source of customers in your category.
Instant Checkout: buying inside the chat
The bigger change is that ChatGPT can now complete the purchase, not just recommend it.
What it is
Instant Checkout lets someone buy a product in the chat. It runs on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which Stripe’s announcement describes as an open standard co-developed by Stripe and OpenAI. ChatGPT collects the customer’s details and payment, then calls the merchant’s own checkout. The merchant accepts or declines the order, charges the payment, handles tax, fulfilment and returns as usual.
Where it works
Stripe’s announcement launched it for ChatGPT users in the US buying from US-based Etsy businesses, with over a million Shopify merchants to follow. It’s a US-first feature. UK shoppers and UK merchants aren’t the launch market.
How payments work
OpenAI’s documentation describes a delegated payment: ChatGPT prepares a one-time payment request with a spending limit and an expiry, and the merchant’s own payment provider handles the transaction. Stripe’s token is the first compatible method, and the protocol is open, so businesses using other providers can adopt it.
My view for UK stores
Don’t build for Instant Checkout yet unless you sell into the US. Do get the product data and feed right now, because that’s what every route depends on, including checkout when it arrives here.
What to do now, on any platform
The work is the same shape whatever you sell on. It’s mostly product data, done properly.
Make the product data answer questions
Titles that say what the product is, descriptions with the details people filter by, every size and colour named properly, real reviews, accurate stock. Shopping research is judged on matching several requirements at once; a product that doesn’t state its material or dimensions can’t match a question about them.
Let the right crawler in
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. Decide on GPTBot separately: blocking it keeps your content out of training without removing you from search. A blanket block on all AI crawlers removes you from both.
Get a feed in order
If you already have a Google Merchant Center feed, check it’s complete and current: that’s the same data a ChatGPT feed needs. If you don’t, building one helps Google Shopping today and ChatGPT tomorrow.
Check what ChatGPT says about you
Ask it the questions your customers ask, in their words, and see whether your products appear and whether the details are right. Wrong details usually trace back to your own pages or feed.
What not to do
◆ ChatGPT shopping, in practice
Do
- Fix product titles, descriptions and attributes first
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt
- Keep a complete, current product feed
- Ask ChatGPT your customers’ questions and check the answers
- Apply for allowlisting if ChatGPT matters in your category
Don’t
- Block every AI crawler to feel safe
- Pay anyone who promises placement: results are organic
- Build Instant Checkout for a UK-only store yet
- Hide product details behind scripts or images of text
- Treat it as separate from Google: the same data serves both
When to get help
If your product data lives in several places, an ERP, a supplier feed and the store, getting it clean enough for AI is a data job. AI and automation covers merging and checking product data before it goes out, and a health check on AI visibility reads your store the way these assistants do.
